Tips for successful camera movements
Tips for zooming
- Begin your shot with a wide-angle view (the camera is as far away as possible to show the whole scene) and as the action progresses slowly zoom in to focus on the action.
- You can draw attention to something in the frame by zooming in to a close up view.
- Try a fast zoom for a dramatic effect.
Tips for panning and tilting
- For a really smooth panning or tilting shot use a tripod.
- Keep the horizon line even when panning and the vertical plane even when tilting.
- Make sure you record a few seconds with the camera in a still position before and after the camera movement. (This is because you may need this time as lead in or out when you edit).
- Don’t make your pan or tilt too fast or your audience won’t be able to see the footage properly.
- Don’t make your pan or tilt too slow or the audience will become bored. Test your shots to get the speed just right.
Tips for tracking and dollying
- Practice moving from side to side and forwards and back while handholding the camera.
- It’s best to keep your knees bent and elbows locked so that the camera doesn’t move around too much.
- You can always try using a trolley or a skateboard – but be careful. Have someone guide you and help keep you and the camera safe.
